World Community Grid: Help Others with Your CPU Cycles
So last night after I came home from Oliver, my grandparents where already here, so we chatted with them until about midnight when everyone went to bed. Well....Almost everyone. I decided to go night owl last night and I didn't get to bed until about 2 am. Which is about the time I got to bed during the summer time. But enough about that. Listening to the lat
est N@N (Net @ Nite) I heard about a little tweak called World Community Grid. Basically it uses your extra CPU cycles to help in research. Currently I have my project as helping to research Cancer. The first task that I did last night lasted until early this morning. Mind you, I turned off my machine of last night because I had to sleep down here. I remember reading an article on CNN about this a while ago. The reason some researchers are using this method is that some researches are independent and they don't have the resources to purchase a computer which they would need to continue with thier research. There's also the option of booking time on a Super Computer, but again, that requires money. So some of the reserachers, in a partnership with IBM formed the World Community Grid. So far they've completed two projects. Smallpox research as well as Human Proteome Folding. And the client you download is no system hog. It sits in the background, using the CPU cycles that you are not using to help complete tasks relevant to Cancer or AIDS research. I would urge anyone with a modern system to download the client and help the World Community Grid defeat many of the diseases that kill millions each year.Tonight is the final performance of Oliver! at the church. There's going to be a lot of people at this performance. My cousins from my Dad's side of the family, my Grandparents from New Brunswick, and various others. Then we have a cast party! Woot!
I'll post photo's tomorrow.
