Today is a good day for music lovers such as myself. Sony BMG, one of the "Big 4" music labels. It's also the last of the 4 labels to announce a DRM free music partnership. Although I don't have listen to a lot of music on Sony BMG, a lot of the indepedents I listen to are distributed through S-BMG, so I really wish they would go DRM free as well. Although there is no formal partnership as of yet, being the only "big" label to not be using DRM is not a good business tactic, especially with CD sales on the down-low. Good going Sony, for once in my life, I'm proud of you.
Well, this is the first post in a few weeks. I suppose I could coin a new term here, Blogger's Block. The fact is, I haven't had a whole lot to say in the past in the past few months. I suppose it's like anything, you go
through, it comes in waves (up, down, up down etc.) but some exciting things are coming my way in '08. I'm graduating, my family is buidling our new house, I'm heading off to Germany and possibly elswhere in the summer and I have NO SWEET CLUE where I'm heading in the fall. But that's besides the point. I just wanted to wish all my good friends on Vox a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. Here's to an awesome 2008.Watching Tekzilla yesterday, they mentioned a site that I'd heard about before called Shelfari, a social network where you can show off your book collection with pride. Now I should say that Vox does a pretty good job of
displaying books, such as it is. However, it's only one component of Vox, which is why I'd rather have a site dedicated exclusively for my books.I have a few gripes, mainly the way you search for books. You have to input every single title in your book collection, one at a time. I'd be nice you could put in multiple books at once, especially if you have a large series, like I do. It's quite pain to have to input every-single-book individually. Just a few usability gripes besides, nothing huge, but like I said, it's still in Beta, so they're bound to have a few things to work.Great site if you enjoy books and want a community feel.
Woo hoo! After 7 years of waiting, the Eskimo's people of the north finally have TiVo! Yey! I've been waiting for this to happen for a LONG time. I rember a few years back when TiVo became a huge thing and my parents considered getting one fr my grandparents, who watch a lot of TV. Unfortunetly, even though the service is avaible in Canada, you can't buy the actual DVR in Canada, which is annoying. Starting in early December, you can pick up a TiVo Series 2 at Best Buy or Future Shop. No Series 3 or HD TV yet though. Ah well, I'll take what I can get.
So I was listening to the radio (surprisingly) tonight and they where talking the fact that a little girl got run over by a bunch of teens in a car going faster then the speed limit. Immedietly the government thought about the teenagers on the road and how they restrict our driving ability. Guess what government? If you keep pushing back when we can do things, we'll never become prodective members of society! Ya'digg?
For some reason in Canada, our government thinks that the best way to fix things, is the to pass a law that fixes it. Government corruption? Pass a bill. They seem to think that inacting new laws is the only way to get things done. And the problem with that policy? The fact that it covers everyone even the people who don't do anything wrong! That's what I hate. I don't do any of the crap that the school talks about, like drugs, skipping class, but yet I'm still punished for it.
/end rant
I haven't been reading to much in the last few months, but I recently started reading like a Maniac. I re ad The Prodigal Daughter by Jeffery Archer in about 2 weeks. It was a really well written book and I was sad for it to end. After that I retunred it to the Library and the Librarian recommended some James Patterson novels that she had on hand. I read through Judge and Jury in a day and half and then The Honeymoon in less time then that. Unfortunetly, she wasn't they're on Friday so I couldn't get another book from her, but Patterson is a genius at writing thriller novels and I can't wait to get my hands on another one of his novels.
Today was rememberance day. It's basic our version of Memorial Day here in Canada. But it's a much bigger deal. Since we've participated in almost all the major conficts of the 20th century, we have a true respect for
our men and women in uniform. Espeically the older veterans. The fact that we don't have many of them left isalso sad. My great grandfather served at Vimy Ridge. We watched 3 of his buddies die in front of him, but he survived. My great-uncle served in the Air-Force, but didn't see any combat because the war ended before he went to Europe. I will always remember the sacrifice they brave people made for my freedom. Lest we forget. So apperently, the Canadian Police forces are no longer concerned with tracking and prosecuting Canadian torrent users as they have are focusing on cracking down on organzied crime that profits from things like pirated music and DVD's. The police are no longer concerned with Canadians that pirate for personal use. This comes a week after the CRIA (the Canadian version of the RIAA) shut down Demonoid by threatening the company that hosts the Demonoid site. This severly weakens the position of the CRIA, not that they don't have the backing of the RCMP as well as the Municipal police forces. Since the RCMP composes the majority of the law enforcement in this country, the CRIA will be hard pressed to carry out the stings that shut down torrent sites.
Take that CRIA!
So I was watching Maholo Daily (Veronica Belmont's new show) and she went into see the Tesla Roadster. What is the Tesla Roadster?
Well it's an electric car. What's so special about it? Well for one thing, it doens't look like a Smart Car. It actually looks very sexy. But don't let it's looks fool you. It's not only good looking, it's fast. The average RPM of a car is 6500. The RPM on this monster is 13,000 twice the number of rotations a minute. This is one fast car. The best part: It runs completely off Electricity. So no more gas bills for you! But better start saving those pennies, becasue this doesn't come cheap. The base price is $98,0000 US.So the cat's finally out of the bag. Google is developing it's own phone opearting system with something called the "Open Handset Alliance" with some big names, including Broadcom, Intel, Samsung, Sprint and T Mobile. Why is this so revolutionary? Because it's an open platform. That means instead of getting a locked down soon to be open iPhone, you go out and by a RAZR or a Dash, or a Blackberry, or whatever and load Android onto it and do whatever you want. No restrictions. T Mobile and Sprint have jumped on in the US. I don't see any Canadian carriers they're yet, but I suspect I will in a while. Aliant, and probably Rogers. I don't think that Telus will be they're because they love to lock down they're phones. I would love to use this when it comes out early next year. If it enables all functionality without haveing to be locked down, I'm all for that.
This is awesome! l and I can't wait to get a cellphone now.
