As you know, I talked about moving back to XP late last week. The move happened yesterday. Let me say this: It was less then smooth. First, the backup utility in iTunes refused to work, so that delayed it by a day. Then once it was installed, I had to go out and hunt for drivers. Not a huge deal, really, just a minor pain. However, my large pain at the moment is the fact that my monitor will not fit at it's native resolution. Let me explain. Unlike a CRT display, LCD's have what is called a native resolution, that is, a resolution that fits better then all resolutions, the resolutions that the panel is built for. Most TV's have a native resolution of 1366x768. My monitor has a native resolution of 1440x900. However, whenever I apply the settings, the screen does scale itself, which leaves me to have to scroll back and forth across the screen, which can be incredibly annoying. I tried everything, looking for a new driver, changing settings, but nothing seems to want to work for me. I emailed XFX support and hopefully they'll get back to me soon.
So I got Windows Vista running today. And thanks to a hack from good 'ol BitTorrent, I don't have to drop over $150 for a copy of Home Premium. But don't tell Microsoft that. I'm enjoying it so far. I mean besides the improved UI, it's the small things like the Instant Search and the improved Window Management. The Iive Tabs feature is also nice. For all the bashing I've done to Vista, I still like it. I don't expect to bumb into the DRM wall yet, as I'm not planning on playing an HD content. With all that said, there are some things that I don't like. It takes forever to both Shut Down and start up as well as the fact that certain app's don't behave well. iTunes is the major culprit here. It works well enough, but it has it's glitches. Logitech Setpoint was another sticking point, but I managed to get it to work after a while. Driver support is pretty good. Considering the disk includes over 15,000 device drivers, it'd better be! My flash drive works fine. I've yet to test my iPod though, though I think it should work fine. I'll give you guys an update in a few days.
I attempted to get Ubuntu running last night. As you may now, I got the CD back in August, but am just now getting around to installing it on my PC now. I tried to boot the 32 bit version last night, but that was unsuccesful. So, on a hunch I went to Wikipeida and checked out the specs on my processor. It's 64 bit which mean I should be using the 64 bit CD. So I poped that in about 10 minutes ago and it booted fine. Only thing is the internet dones't work, but's a minor bug. I'll probably partition and install either tomorrow on my free or Thursday on my free.
I was talking to my cousin and he sugested I also install Windows Vista RC1 as well. I don't know about that yet. I might wait until this friday and see if Microsoft puts RC2 out for the Public. If they don't I'll install RC2 but I'l wait and see.
*removes heart from throat* I''ve been trying to get my internet to work for the last little while, but have been unsuccesful. I tried a suggestion from a friend of mine about installing new drivers for the ethernet. The ethernet is intagrated into the mobo. I was installing the drivers when the computer shut down randomly. So I figured it must be the drivers. I went into device manager to see that it wasnt' detecting the hardware. So I rolled back the driver and that seemed to do the trick. Needless to say, MSI needs to fix it's drivers for it's hardware. Until this issue is resolved I'm not going to touch those drivers again. I just got this machine and I don't want anything to happen to it. I'll get my cousin to help me out on this when, since he does have a bit more experience with technology then I do (being born first and all.)
I'll let you guys now how it turns out.
